Pickett the Bowtruckle is our next project from the Harry Potter universe. I had previously made the Monster Book of Monsters. I had been thinking about creating Pickett for a long time, but I lacked floral tape. Until now 🙂 In this post I will show you how to make Pickett the Bowtruckle.
We meet Pickett in the Fantastic Beasts series. It is a magical creature of the species of Bowtruckles and looks like a twig with leaves. He is a friend of Newt Scamander, a Hogwarts graduate, famous magizoologist and author of the book “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”. Bowtruckles live in trees, but our Pickett travels with Newt and most often stays in his coat pocket. In the Harry Potter fandom you will find more interesting facts about Pickett, bow owls and other magical creatures and wizards.

How to make Pickett
Creating a bowtruckle consists of two stages. The first is to make a skeleton from wire, and the second is to wrap it with floral tape.
To create Pickett’s skeleton
Prepare 3 pieces of wire about 40 cm long. This wire will first make the legs, and then other body parts.
- Bend the wires in half and create 3 legs, then twist them together to form the body.
- After twisting the torso, divide the needles into 3 parts: 2 needles for the left hand, 2 needles for the head and 2 needles for the right hand.
- Add another wire to the hand so that each hand consists of 3 wires, so Pickett will have 3 fingers.
- Twist hands, leaving the ends that will become the fingers. Initially, I bent the wire onto the fingers, but later I gave up on it (some photos still show thick fingers).
- Widen the head wires slightly and then twist them. Attach the leaves at the connection point and return the needles to the bottom. It is worth twisting the wires around the eyes so that they stick out slightly after applying the tape.
Wrapping the wire body with floral tape
The skeleton made in this way should be tightly tied with floral tape. It was my first time using tape that sticks together after being stretched, so it holds perfectly. I worked with approximately 20 cm pieces of tape, wrapping subsequent elements of the Pickett body. I started with the legs and worked my way up. I wrapped the tape around the fingers a little behind the wire and pressed them to create even thinner ends.

Taking advantage of a beautiful, sunny day, we took Pickett for a photo session in his natural habitat 🙂

Nothing gives more satisfaction than doing something yourself. I haven’t even thought about DIY as my hobby, I’ve just done different “projects” when it was needed. Sometimes it’s a disguise for the Masquerade Party in kindergarten. Another time, cutting out the pumpkin and baking the witch’s fingers for Haloween. Or simply organizing holiday souvenirs. Now I decided to share my realizations with you. Let’s go it together!
