The wandering teddy bear – preschool adventures

At our preschool, a wonderful initiative called “The wandering teddy bear” has begun. This unique project allows children to develop their creativity and storytelling skills. But what exactly does this project involve? Each child, following alphabetical order, takes the teddy bear home for the entire weekend. This is a special opportunity to spend time with the wandering teddy bear while integrating it into the family’s daily life. The children eagerly show the teddy bear their rooms and favorite toys. Moreover, they involve it in family activities such as walks, reading fairy tales, and even trips!

To capture these beautiful moments, each child, together with their parents, takes photos documenting the teddy bear’s adventures. These photographs are then added to a special Teddy bear’s diary, where each page includes a short description. This is a wonderful way to develop preschoolers’ storytelling skills and creative thinking.

Thanks to this initiative, children not only learn responsibility but also how to share their experiences and tell stories. Moreover, they get a glimpse into the daily lives of their peers. The wandering teddy bear thus becomes a symbol of friendship and shared moments, and its diary is filled with smiles and unforgettable memories.

But as you may have already noticed, at the heart of this wonderful project is the teddy bear itself! And that’s where my special mission began—to crochet the wandering teddy bear for this adventure. The preschool group played an important role in this task as well. The children designed the bear, imagining it as a light brown teddy with small ears, blue eyes, and a red-and-green sweater.

Below, you’ll find a crochet pattern for this very special bear! 😊

Sweater edging

Before stuffing and finishing the head, it is recommended to add an edging to the sweater.

Work the edging around the neck and bottom of the sweater by crocheting into the front loops of stitches from rounds 36 and 50.
Attach the yarn at the back of the teddy bear, make 2 chain stitches, and then crochet into each stitch with double crochets (dc):

  • On the neck: 30 double crochets (dc).
  • On the bottom of the sweater: 54 double crochets (dc).

Next, work the second round using front post double crochets (FPDC).
Finally, secure the yarn, cut it, and weave in the ends.

Finish crocheting the head:

72) 54 sc
73) (7 sc, dec) × 6 [48]
